About this safari
A short holiday can still reveal two very different sides of Kenya. This 4 day Kenya family safari starts among the wooded slopes and lakeside habitats of Lake Nakuru before continuing to the open grasslands of the Masai Mara. One night near Nakuru and two nights in the Mara give the journey a clear rhythm without changing accommodation every evening.
Your family travels in a private safari vehicle with a driver guide who can adjust viewing stops and rest breaks to your interests. At Nakuru, the focus is on rhino habitat, buffalo, giraffes and birds. In the Mara, you have a full day to follow animal activity, explore different habitats and enjoy a picnic at an approved location or return to your accommodation for lunch.
This itinerary suits families who want a first safari within a limited holiday window. Accommodation is in lodges or permanent tented rooms with beds and private bathroom facilities, selected during quotation. Read about Lake Nakuru National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve, then share your preferred dates with Esperanza Tourism.

Your safari itinerary

Meet your driver guide at your Nairobi hotel or an agreed collection point early in the morning. After a briefing about the route and your family needs, drive toward the Great Rift Valley with a comfort stop along the way. Arrive in the Nakuru area for lunch and check in where the property schedule permits.
Spend the afternoon exploring Lake Nakuru National Park by vehicle. Your guide will scan open clearings and woodland edges for rhinos, buffalo and giraffes while introducing children to animal tracks and feeding behaviour. Bird sightings vary with water levels and the season, so the lake is approached as a changing habitat rather than a guaranteed flamingo spectacle. Return to your lodge for dinner and a restful first night.
After breakfast, leave Nakuru and travel toward the Masai Mara through the changing landscapes of the Rift Valley and the Narok region. This is a transfer day, so your driver plans comfort breaks and a suitable lunch arrangement rather than adding unnecessary sightseeing detours. Arrive at your accommodation and settle into your room.
If the arrival time and reserve entry schedule permit, enjoy an afternoon game drive to become familiar with the Mara grasslands. Watch for zebra and antelope herds, and learn how predators use cover and open space. The guide will balance viewing time with the children’s energy levels. Dinner is served at your lodge or permanent tented camp, where you stay for the next two nights.
Set out after an early breakfast for your main Masai Mara wildlife day. Your guide chooses a route based on recent animal activity and current track conditions, with time to pause at interesting sightings instead of racing between locations. Search for big cats, elephant families, buffalo and the smaller creatures that make the grassland ecosystem work.
A packed lunch at a designated picnic place allows you to explore farther into the reserve. Families who prefer a midday rest can request shorter morning and afternoon drives with lunch at the accommodation, subject to its location and entry arrangements. During migration months, herds may add another layer to the experience, although river crossings cannot be scheduled. Return before the permitted closing time for dinner and overnight.
Enjoy breakfast and check out before beginning the road journey back to Nairobi. The final morning is planned around a comfortable return rather than a promised extra game drive, helping you avoid rushing toward a flight. Your guide can include a suitable comfort stop and time to discuss the animals and landscapes your family has encountered.
On arrival, you are dropped at your Nairobi hotel or the agreed airport terminal. Lunch and accommodation this evening are outside the package. If you are flying internationally, an evening departure is preferable and the collection time should be agreed when booking. A later flight, an extra Nairobi night or an additional safari day can be arranged separately.
