Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha offers a relaxed change of pace between Kenya’s vehicle based safari destinations. The freshwater lake is fringed by papyrus, acacia woodland and productive bird habitat, while hippos are commonly associated with its shoreline and bays.

Boat excursions can provide excellent opportunities to watch African fish eagles, cormorants, kingfishers and other waterbirds. Conditions on the lake can change quickly, so boating should always be arranged with licensed local operators and current weather in mind.

The lake can be visited year round. Drier months often provide easier road conditions, while wet periods can bring excellent bird activity and dramatic skies.

Naivasha’s high elevation brings cool mornings and evenings. Afternoon winds can make the lake rough, so boat timing should follow local advice.

Lake Naivasha is easily reached by road from Nairobi and sits naturally on routes continuing to Elementaita and Nakuru.
