National Park
A dramatic Rift Valley national park near Lake Naivasha, famous for towering cliffs, geothermal landscapes, cycling, hiking, rock climbing and open wildlife country.
Hell's Gate National Park offers one of Kenya's most distinctive safari experiences because visitors can explore selected parts of the park on foot or by bicycle as well as by vehicle. Located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley near Lake Naivasha, the park is characterised by towering cliffs, volcanic formations, geothermal activity, open grassland and broad valley scenery.
Unlike most traditional game viewing parks, Hell's Gate places a strong emphasis on active outdoor experiences. Cycling and hiking are among its best known attractions, while Fischer's Tower is associated with rock climbing. Wildlife includes zebra, giraffe, buffalo, antelope and other plains species, although the experience is more about scenery, geology and adventure than searching for large predators.
Hell's Gate combines naturally with Lake Naivasha, where travellers can add a boat excursion and birdwatching. It can also be included before continuing north toward Lake Elementaita and Lake Nakuru National Park. Browse our Kenya safari itineraries or use Plan My Safari to include Hell's Gate in a private journey.
For current park rules, opening times, activities and official visitor guidance, see the Kenya Wildlife Service Hell's Gate National Park page.
Hell's Gate is defined by steep cliffs, volcanic towers, open valley floor, geothermal features, rocky gorges and expansive Rift Valley views.
Cycling, hiking, game viewing, photography and approved rock climbing are central to the Hell's Gate experience. Activity access should always follow current Kenya Wildlife Service safety guidance and designated routes.
Zebra, giraffe, buffalo, antelope and other plains wildlife may be seen. Hell's Gate is not primarily a big predator destination, so the strongest reasons to visit are its landscapes, active experiences and geology.
The cliffs, grasslands and surrounding Rift Valley habitats support raptors and a varied bird community, making Hell's Gate a useful addition to a Lake Naivasha birding itinerary.
The park is accessible throughout the year. Drier periods are often more comfortable for cycling and hiking, while wetter months can bring greener scenery. Always check current weather and trail conditions before undertaking active experiences.
The Rift Valley setting is generally warm and dry, but conditions can change quickly. Sun protection, drinking water and suitable walking or cycling gear are important.
Hell's Gate is reached by road from Nairobi through Naivasha. Kenya Wildlife Service describes access through the Lake Naivasha area and Elsa Gate, making the park practical for a day trip or a longer Rift Valley itinerary.
